VETIS tech high graduation on Murray Schools ships.

This Practical Senior High VETIS pathway combines core SACE English and Maths, with hands-on maritime, tourism, hospitality, care services, and vital mental health.

The program, home-ported at Mannum and cruising the length of the Murray, is designed for practical older teens. It provides qualifications suited to small ship operations, safety, water rescue, first aid, catering, hospitality, tourism, music, and outdoor recreation leadership.

The learning is riverboat adventure tourism.

"Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing—absolute nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." - Wind in the Willows - AA Milne

There are three legal maritime documents to be maintained on a school ship. These are essential daily public Student Logbook tasks.

  • Each student maintains their record of the ship's "Log", supervised by the Captain, a progressive record of location and any specific events that affect safe ship management.

  • The Seaman's qualification Log & record of service days, date, time, location, on the ships. This is required evidence for maritime qualifications.

  • The remote student study Log is for their school subject management evidence. The student will maintain their daily "Personal Activity Log" as a record of their experience and reflection, under a skilled teacher's guidance. This student Log is a private record of their school learning work, shared with their teachers. The student decides who sees it.

TS Mundoo is our lead school ship that will provide the following services while managing practical student learning:-

  • TS Mundoo will be available for community events and catered functions throughout the river community. Relocation cruises and special events services are training events for students.

  • Special catering and events: marketed throughout the navigable river.

  • Crising between functions will be student training time, VETIS maritime operations, Cookery, Restaurant table service, and Water adventure skills leadership.

  • Music will be a major curriculum requirement. Students will form a brass band and develop competence in other individual passion instruments as part of their formal music curriculum learning.

A senior student team will help crew Mundoo.

They will gain Logbook experience in commercial operations, a strong set of riverboat industry skills, and VET Qualifications, assisting with commercial functions. Music, instrumental and choir, will be a focus of the entertainer curriculum.

The school ships will be both home and school for our students.

School ships will operate in line with the normal 4-term school year. During school vacation, they will operate Sunday-to-Sunday family holiday programs. Full-time students can take school holidays with parents or stay on board the ships.
